Value of Family Bibles in Research
Family Bibles are substantially important personal records in our research.
Not only are Family Bibles important family heirlooms, with significant personal value, sometimes they are the only records of birth, marriages and deaths. When we discover such events recorded within it’s pages, its important to record our findings in a research log, such as the one we have provided on this web site. (Note: you must be logged in as an authenticated user to record your results on this form.) This is especially important as we collaborate as a team of researchers and writers on the Rawlins History Project.
Last year (2011), Linda Woodward Geiger came across such a find in her research. She said, “While visiting the Tennessee State Library and Archives this week I found photo copies of two family Bibles, several obituaries, and a brief family history in the Woodard/Woodward files.” You can read more about her discovery here.
So, remember not to overlook this as an important research tool. For more ideas on research tools, consider the research checklist posted in a previous blog.
